China extending Technical hold on terror listing of Masood Azhar at the UN

In March this year, China restricted India’s move to brand Masood Azhar as being so-called terrorist. China is the only UN member which guards on what India has to say about the established terrorist. On Saturday, China said that its technical hold on India’s decision to claim Masood Azhar as the designated terrorist has been extended. The technical hold of China is set to lapse and China has no objections. The resolution to designate Masood Azhar as the terrorist is to be passed automatically but it is being extended for another 6 months.

The technical hold on the application submitted this March to 1267 committee is already being extended as said by the spokesman of Foreign Ministry Geng Shuang.

Still, there are different views on the listing application submitted by India. The extension of the technical hold will permit the committee more time just to deliberate the matter where the relevant parties can indulge in further consultations.

On 31st March, China, the permanent member of UN, blocked India’s move to restrict the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammad and the Pathankot mastermind. Among the 15 UN members, China was the only country putting a hold on the proposed application. But, 14 members of UN council still supported India’s claim to place Masood Azhar on 1267 sanctions to impose travel ban and asset freezing.

According to Geng, 1267 committee must stick to the prime principles of impartiality, objectivity, professionalism and must base judgments on solid evidences.
