A sugary soda in combination with fried chicken or burger can escalate your body to acquire more pounds, a study suggests.
Folks having had a sweetened drink in association with a high-protein meal stored more unused fat, in comparison to others who had the same food with a sugar-free beverage, revealed laboratory tests.
Their bodies failed to burn a third of the additional calories added by the sugary drink, found the researchers.
The participants also burned less fat from their food, and it took fewer energy overall to digest the meal.
“If extra carbohydrates are added on top of that is already in a meal, it will definitely have an effect on the body so that it uses fat as an energy source, and this goes into energy storage,” said lead researcher Shanon Casperson, a research biologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Sodas, fruit drinks, sweetened coffee and iced tea drinks, energy beverages and so on are leading added sugar sources in the American diet, as per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, six in 10 kids and half of adults, each day drink at least one sugary beverage.
Food contains three major nutrients typesl carbohydrates, fats and protein. Casperson and her team wished to observe how extra carbs in the form of a sugary drink would affect fats and proteins metabolism.
“With those three variables, we are able to calculate the amount of nutrients used” as well as the calories burned every minute, said Casperson.
