Mercedes-Maybach GLS to be revealed next month. Mercedes-Benz is about to extend its Maybach sub-brand line-up beyond the S-Class.
The report says this new addition will be the new version of the upcoming third-generation GLS (formerly GL). It seems like with the new GLS, Mercedes wants to compete with other brands such as Land Rover’s Range Rover SVAutobiography and Bentley’s Bentayga.
The German luxury manufacturer has also seen remarkable success with its AMG performance arm, so it’s looking to expand its Maybach brand.
Mercedes will debut the new SUV at the Beijing motor show in April and then revealed production form at the Los Angeles motor show in November.
According to Britain’s Autocar publication, the new Mercedes-Maybach GLS will share the same basic aluminum and steel body as well as an advanced four-wheel-drive system on less-heavily specified versions of the new third-generation GLS.
However, the new addition is expected to come with more luxurious and a number of subtle design enhancements in the interior as compared to standard versions of the American-built SUV.
The Maybach GLS will include the Mercedes-AMG-developed M177 V-8 petrol engine which was launched in the S560e. It makes 468hp in the S 560.
Autocar said, “We have been quietly surprised by the sales success of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, which is proving extremely popular in many key markets. The plan now is to extend the exclusivity surrounding the Maybach name into the upper end of the SUV segment. We’re confident this new model will leave little to be desired in terms of luxury.”
